The state Certified SPAB Instructor delivers classroom-in-service and behind-the-wheel (BTW) driver training programs according to established Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and California Department of Education (CDE) laws, rules, and regulations while honoring Lux Bus America’s approach to business that starts with our commitment to safety, operational excellence, and customer service.


  • Delivers and maintains classroom, and behind-the-wheel (BTW) School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) driver training program
  • Assist with the development of in-services geared to safe pupil transportation practices
  • Assists with oversight of all applicants, internal and external, selected to obtain SPAB certification
  • Assist with creating and maintaining classroom training content, such as:
    • Classroom book, visual aids, handouts, manuals, tests, etc.
      • Attends and participates in quarterly safety meetings, as required
      • Follows BTW training pertaining to BTW instructors guide:
      • Routes, maneuvers, cone layouts, teaching points, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, vehicle proficiency, etc.
      • Train, test, and evaluate applicants to establish proficiency and readiness for state testing in the areas to include:
    • BTW:
      • Basic vehicle familiarization and movement
      • Precision training in vehicle movement and driving fundamentals
      • Transmission control and shifting procedures
      • Emergency procedures
      • Final Appraisal
    • Classroom:
      • Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to explain applicable government regulations, policies, and standards such as
      • California Vehicle Code,
      • California Education Code,
      • California Code of Regulations,
      • Title 5 and Title 13 sections related to transportation,
      • Any other motor-carrier policies related to operation and transportation of passengers, as well as all Company administrative policies, procedures, and safety rules

  • Complete all recordkeeping related to training activities on individual drivers’ T-01 (Training Certificate) and T-02 (Training Record)
  • Consult with local CHP to schedule driver testing, and oversee process through completion
  • Participation with local instructor groups, such as California Association of School Transportation Officials (CASTO) and Driver Trainers Advisory Committee (DTAC) quarterly meetings
  • Observe market trends in training, vehicle models, new technology, etc.
  • Develop a network of other SPAB or School Bus instructors who can provide contracted driver classrooms, BTW training services, and insurance
  • Determine when contracted training services are needed to meet demand and coordinate and schedule training sessions as required
  • Review and approve driver training time-keeping records
  • Evaluate applicant performance, complete verbal and written appraisals with recommendations for improvement, provide feedback to managers on progress, and make recommendations for removal from the training program as appropriate
  • Participate in accident investigations involving SPAB drivers for the purpose of determining additional training needs
  • Lead and/or assist with driver retraining as required
  • Conduct pre-employment road tests, and make appropriate recommendations
  • Contribute alongside other supervisors, managers and staff to formulate goals and objectives
  • Perform duties and functions to help streamline the daily business operations of the company
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing additional tasks and assignments as needed


  • 5 years of experience as a SPAB or school bus, transit bus, or farm labor vehicle driver OR
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience
  • 2 years of experience as a SPAB or school bus, transit bus, or farm labor vehicle driver and 3 years of equivalent experience driving vehicles that require a Class A or B commercial driver license
  • Currently holds a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current state-issued SPAB or School Bus Instructor Certification
  • Clean DMV K4 Record
  • Pass a background check
  • Pass a drug test as required by the Department of Transportation and Lux Bus America Co
  • Must be at least 25 years of age to satisfy insurance requirements
  • Must be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work: San Jose, CA 95126

  • Monday- Friday (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM)
  • Must be available on off hours and weekends

  • The salary wage range that Lux Bus America reasonably expects to pay for the position is $83,000 to $112,000 yearly.
